Sports Illustrated their swimwear edition and had its humble beginnings in 1964 as a five-page feature in the nation’s sports annual magazine. Was invented by Sports Illustrated editor Andre Laguerre to fill the winter months, a typically slow spot on the sports calendar. He asked fashion reporter Jule Campbell to look to fill that space, including the cover, with a beautiful model. In its posts she features female fashion models, celebrities, and athletes wearing swimsuits, with pictures in various locations around the world, turning those pretty girls into stars on an unprecedented scale.
At the time, the swimsuit problem filled a need in women, regardless of whether this magazine didn’t make logical sense when reporting on women’s swimwear. He has been credited not only with the creation of supermodels, but also the popularization of the bikini as a valid beach option, it was then in 1964 that the Bikini Invasion began.
Campbell included essays and travel journalism and always credited the models by name and the swimwear by brand. It was of course all about the pictures, the beauty, and the skin but these touches allowed the publication to remain above all.

In May 2022, Yumi Nu became the first Asian plus-size model to secure a cover spot with the magazine. The pictures were taken in Montenegro.
Also in May, Maye Musk became the oldest model to feature on the Swimsuit cover, appearing at 74 years old. The pictures were taken in Belize.

Starting with her breakout reality show Keeping Up With the Kardashians that first aired in 2007, Kardashian has conquered every major industry since. The mom of four has since created an uber-popular mobile game Kim Kardashian: Hollywood released a photo book, Selfish, appeared as an actress in several movies, and launched many products, including her wildly successful KKW Beauty, KKW Fragrance and Skims shapewear.
But, even after all her monumental achievements, Kardashian still had never appeared in SI Swimsuit until she made her debut on the 2022 cover.
Her looks were designed to feel futuristic to match the looks Kardashian has been wearing in real life.
